FERRARA - Estense Castle - Traces of Memory
An exhibition that annually renews the appointment between the city and the contemporary artistic dimension

Memory is what exists and co-exists contemporaneously in everything, in the eternal, magical and mysterious sense, in as much as it takes the form of a truly philosophical image. In creating art, the aspect of memory does not coincide with, nor does it even touch the dimension of recollection.

Rather, it is an image thought of or a thought imagined (the relationship is inevitably reversible), within which to allow the flow of passages, signs, scraps of something indefinable that has to do with the eternal, with whatever exists in an individual’s intuition and is expressed in a collective feeling.

If to these few, short considerations we add the historic atmosphere of the city of Ferrara – which was the first to give visionary aesthetic revelation to the artists who lived there – it is not hard to understand the birth and structure of an exhibition such as “Traces of Memory”, designed and staged by Paola Trevisan inside the Estense Castle.

It is a varied exhibition which has brought together the works of dozens of international artists, all of whom, each from his or her own individual stylistic perspective, have considered the aspect of memory in relation both to themselves and to the city which has been their home. They show a many-sided world of ideas formed around things that are just as they appear to be, authentic sources of revealed and magically enigmatic visions.

Among the writings in De Chirico’s “Memoirs”, allusions can be found to Ferraran interiors, rooms, workshops and some of the streets in the old ghetto, all viewed and reconsidered within the mysterious dimension of the “hyper-real”, that spontaneous, important expression in which time is not allowed to become past.

It is an unedited vision which records everyday experiences, common events or objects, among the eternal signs of memory or, rather, of an art of memory through which to practise the subconscious sense of the already known or the experience of a future which has features of the old.

In its vast display of disparate artistic techniques and expression, “Traces of Memory” has not diluted this central character that, in sudden revelation, acknowledges that absolute of magical, aesthetic, immediate, even considered values that will never cease to interest the most demanding sector of the public, who will be leaving the halls of the Estense Castle hugging a dream, clutching a mystery.

“Little Treasures"
Galleria de' Marchi, Bologna/ Italy
May 10 - 24, 2008

Over recent years I have curated many fine exhibitions of artwork from individual creators from all over the world. Through the great diversity of individual expression these exhibitions have grown in size and attention and have always been well received.

The 2006 show ‘Magic. The Magic Paths of Art’ at Castello Estense in Ferrara seemed to re-awaken an awareness of the great traditions of art inherent to Ferrara. The traditionalists with their superb renderings of reality echoed the spirit of Cosmé Tura, while the magic of the metaphysical and abstraction, reminded us of Carra and De Chirico.

More recently, at the same venue, the 2007 exhibition ‘Spirit – The Spirit in Art’ brought with it a redoubled enthusiasm and enlightening interchange between the artists, their public and myself. It was as if a great discovery of emotional and spiritual treasure had been located.
As we dug far into the night (often over good limoncello) we knew that there was much more to be unearthed.

I am proud to present to you these ‘Little Treasures’. They are the results of our intense search through the magical and spiritual domains of our existence. Excavated with deepest thought and care, they are the polished jewels from each artist’s heart. Every gem is a fresh and
spontaneous idea before it grows into something weightier - the rare pearl discovered deep within the luscious oyster.

I would like to thank all artists who will take part and give their contribution to this special exhibition. Thank you for your interest and I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the exhibition.

“Spirit. The Spirit in Art”
Curated by Paola Trevisan
Imbarcadero Rooms - Estense Castle – Ferrara/ Italy
November 10 – 18, 2007

Thanks to several and lively discussion with some artists I have the pleasure to work with and to exchange ideas regarding the wonderful and complex art world, I realized how fundamental is the spiritual dimension in the contemporary artistic panorama. In spite of apparences and in spite what we daily see published in specialized art magazines and exhibited at the most important art fairs, contemporarian artists are intimately related to the spiritual sphere, firmly believing in the the spirituality power.

“Spirit. The Spirit in Art” exhibition was originated with the aim to bring the spirituality and the artistic creativity to interact each others and to integrate with any area of the social, of the culture and more generally, of our contemporaneity.

“Spirit” is not only an occasion to develop intense reflexions, considerations and ideas on the spiritual sphere in the artistic universe, but it also promotes and encourages an intercultural exchange thanks to the presence of different nationalities, traditions and cultures brought by the exhibitive artists.
The exhibition wishes also to rediscover, stimulate and bring forth the unlimited possibilities originated from the relation between Art and Spirituality; all artists interpret this theme in the most incline way to their nature and their own personality.

Once again artists aim to demonstrate to the public how the contemporary art is not simply decorativism but it’s the pursuit and the belief in important values which cannot be disregarded in opposition to the technological civilization or anyway to a civilization with no ideologies.

The protagonist of this exhibition is not only the abstract and informal art, thanks to the psychological power of the colour and the pictorial gesture, intrinsic elements of the art making but also the figurative and surreal art, the sculpture and all artistic expressions bring their contribute and their interpretation.

The artist’s sensibility can feel the religious influence but it’s mostly connected to a wider and more complex spirituality concept the artists interpret in relation to their life, their souls, their values, their tradition and, fundamental, their relationship with the Nature. As Catherine Hammond writes about the Aboriginal tradition, Spirituality is the belief and the feeling within ourselves that allows us to become a part of the whole natural environment around us; but also birth, death and life are part of this universe.

Photography also is a lively participant to the spiritual interpretation as the camera seeks to take a portrait not only of the humanity but also of the human beings intention. We meet photographers who, before shooting, need the urgency to feel part of the environment – the future subject of their photos - in intimate syntony with the natural landscapes and and their beauties.

The spirituality, eventually, brings us to the introspection, to the search of us, of our conscious or subconscius distinguish us; artists search the true and values inside themselves; as Confucio said: “What the undeveloped man seeks outside, what the advanced man seeks is within himself”.

The Spirit demostrate to be, inside this exhibitive path, the potential source of every thing that is materialized into matter but also everything is intangible is real. There is no separation between Life and Spirit, they are inevitably connected weather for good or bad creation and this link forms the basis of our human condition.

Spirit exhibition has the pretention to be an invitation to get close to various spirituality aspects which are part of our lives and that artists, thanks to their great sensibility and humanity, feel in their souls the need to share and demonstrate them.

The beautiful and evocative setting provided by the Imbarcadero Rooms of the historic Estense Castle, contributes to set up a greatly suggestive scenery in a variegated range of sensations and emotions.

“Rooms of Memory"
Federician Rooms, Svevo Castle, Trani
8 May – 6 June 2007

I first would like to thank the De Nittis Foundation from Barletta for their pleasant invitation to curate the International Section of foreign artists coming from various countries I had the delight to work with in the near past.

But I also would like to thank all artists who gave me the opportunity to show an exhibition of rare quality and thickness; working and meeting great artistic characters and the different cultures you belong, is an unceasing source of confrontation and stimulation not only for my profession but also for my personality.

To me it’s a joy the fact many international artists gave their enthusiastic adhesion to the proposal of exhibit in this important manifestation taken in such charming sceneries. The authors, in these prestigious historical Castles of Trani and Barletta will freely employ and deploy their pictorial gestures, their colours, their signs, their feelings and their memories, confronting each other with great harmony, even in the diversity of their expressive forms.

The meeting between artists with a deep pictorial sensibility and with a great creativity, gifted of real talent and with that mastery permits to range with confidence over all types of expression and artistic language, represents a motif of exchange and dialogue inside the exhibition enriching it also culturally.

The exhibition aims to evidence the emotional and memorial aspect of making art. Each showed painting and photograph it’s a result involving deept thoughts, perceptions, feelings and memories behind; painting, psychical reality, inquitetudes of existing appears, flue to the canvas or through the shot, joining conscious and unconscious. This way artist, in the rooms of their memory, make dialogue distance and presence, fantasy and story, truth and fiction letting the viewers discovering the traces and the signs of their intentions.

The confrontation born among the strong and different artistic personalities, without taking off any overall harmony, is inspired and guided by the Art, able to get through any physical or geographical border. This extraordinary aspect demonstrates, once more, how in the contemporary artistic panorama, emotions, spirit, memories and communication still being deeply and indissolubly connected to the Art and to our Lives.

"MAGIC. THE MAGIC PATHS OF ART"
International contemporary art Exhibition
Ferrara, Estense Castle
November 18 - 26, 2006

Magic: at first this theme could appear obsolete and out of style, yet the Magic and Esoteric is an important element in the Arts as well as in our daily life, since we cannot separate Art and Life.

Emotions stirred by artwork are part of Magic, so are the beauty and poetry suggested through a landscape – created by the impulses and inner reality of the Artist when he organizes them on a canvas - , the surreal and fantastic dimensions of our mind in all of its expressions are intimately connected to our inconscious which is a magical world. Memory and memories are magic traces of our reality. Art is magic as it has the unlimited power of its pictorial vocabulary at its disposal in the act of creating. In this way Art is akin to Life because it is a Creation.

The curators would like to underline an important aspect we lingered on during the exhibition title choice, such as the magic components of the painting as art making.
It is our aim, in fact, to invite artists to focus on all the facets of the proposed theme, because Magic reveals itself through the power and brightness of colours, through the different effects of forms, the textures, the pictorial matter, the magnetic energy from the pictorial sign which spring from the canvas. So that the creation of images as well as the invention and elaboration of space and colours are part of the intrinsic elements of the art making process. Thus Magic is released through the flow of the living and acting forces on the canvas, the interaction of space, figures and colour connection, taking them to their physical limits.

It is not pure chance the selected city to host this important Exhibition is Ferrara. The magic city per excellence together with Prague and Torino, not only for her beauty but above all because in the Medieval period she was the last stronghold of Alchemy and Astrology. Even today, going around through Ferrara’s ancient streets, visiting her palaces and special places, admiring the frescoes and formidable paintings, lingering in churches and convents, we can feel signs of this presence. Again, not by chance, the Estense city gave birth to the alchemy artist Cosmé Tura and she is proud of the legendary magician Chiozzino, a kind of Faust from Ferrara, who signed a pact with the devil. Worth mentioning as well is the fact that Ferrara was the city which inspired Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà during their metaphysical period.

The exhibition aims to be related with Magic as an element very much present in most different cultures and ages, particularly during the Middle Ages and still today where it represents a strong source of fascination and suggestion in our artistic world still. The magical is a fascinating component of our existence and this manifestation represents an invitation to go without fear towards that side which is not necessarily dark, unknown and sinister but also a wonderful discovery of a parallel reality, able to help us understand and interpret particular aspects, events and coincidences. Thanks to their talent and sensitivity, artists are the best interpreters of Nature and Reality. Their creative work is an alchemy of sorts mixing indeed several components unknown to the public and producing strong feelings, attraction; an alphabet for reading the world and its signs.

“Magic” wishes to rediscover, stimulate and bring forth the unlimited possibilities of Art. Artists reveal themselves as the sensitive intermediaries between reality and the unknown, when through their aesthetic journeys they are in touch with the mystery of life, its spirits and divinities .

The beautiful and evocative setting provided by the "Imbarcadero Rooms" of the historic Estense Castle will contribute to set up a greatly suggestive scenery in a variegated range of sensations and emotions.

The organizers, as usual during the Exhibitions at the Estenese Castle, will select and bring together artists representative of this kind of spiritual and artistic research connected with the magic theme and who still believe in the emotional possibilities that this art offers. The range of expressive forms can be extremely wide and varied: painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, installations and graphic art.

On this artistic and cultural occasion, the Jury will award the "Ercole d’Este" Prize to the four artists who will show the most significant artworks during the Exhibition.
The curators will also make sure to involve Institutions, critics, operators, collectors, press and specialized media, underlining how they approach the cultural and marketing side of the event, which is an inseparable aspect of contemporary art.

In “Magic” we will go into a path rich in mistery, magic and in that obscure beauty which nvelops the universe – illusive or real – represented by artists.

"HORIZONS"
International Art Exhibition
Villa La Ferdinanda, Artimino (Po) - Italy
18 - 26 March, 2006

It is in the spiritual nature of artists to dislike limits. Their talents and sensibility prevent their conditioning by the norms of society, permitting their eyes and art to go beyond any border. They move forward into the known and unknown, testing the horizons of real and unreal, ending and unending, visible and invisible. "Horizons" will uncover the endless facets tied to the interpretation of this artistic theme. It will permit us to experience the artists' vision of Horizons involving memories, souls, domesticity and nature.

The Soul Horizons. The emotional aspect intrinsically remains connected to many artworks, able to move although the incessant bombing of images, of provocations, of anestetisms that every day we endure; the sign, the chromie, the texture still able to make us feel strong feelings and pulsions. “Horizons” in which live tensions, vibrations, traces of existence RIVERSATE in flowing of emotions and painted, carved, photographed images.

The Domestical Horizons. Also the domestic horizons, daily under our eyes, constitute a source of inspiration for the artists who, catching, charmed, the poetry and the essence, transform them in lyric, surreal, fantastic images depending on their interpretation and momentanly mood.

The Natural Horizons. The power of colours, of shapes, of sensations, of the suggestions and of perfumes of the natural borders wraps the artists overwhelming and stimulating their senses. The Landscape, always changeable and rich of infinity shades. It reveals itself in its whole truth and power to those artists who daily paint it, showing unlimited faceting and interpretation.

The Horizons of the memory. A particular aspect that the curators of the exhibition want to inquire and at the same time to evidence is the emotional and memorial aspect of making art; "in the works rich of intentions the vision" - has written Valerio Grimaldi in a text of his - "tracima for that mysterious tie that joins painting and psychical reality, painting and inquietudine of existing, nearly a continuation of apparitions, of rivelazioni if it is true, as it is true, that the artwork as conscious written is, at the same time, unconscious design, design of itself, graphical self-portrait of the author also in its most insignificant drawn (tratto). In this way the artists sovverte distance and presence, fantasy and story, truth and fiction in the rooms of their memory ". “Horizons” is an International Exhibition aiming to gather different artists, established and emerging, Italian and foreign, young and less younger; each artist will enrich the exhibition through his/her own style and artistic interpretation of the proposed theme with a soul-searching personal harmony. Participating artists will freely employ and deploy with great harmony although the diversity of their creative DNA. Inside the exhibitive path will be revealed images, emotions, stories and memories that will guide us in a sweet abandon between reality and fiction. The organizers will select and bring artists together as representatives of this kind of spiritual and artistic research and the range of expressive forms can be extremely wide and varied: painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and graphic.

During this artistic and cultural occasion, the Jury will select, in the name of ArtexArte Foundation, five among the most significative participant artists of “Horizons”.

The curators will also make sure to involve Institutions, critics, operators, collectors, press and specialized media. As well, they will underline the approach of the cultural and of the marketing aspect of this event, which is an inseparable feature of contemporary art. The outstanding artistry of “Horizons” will be exhibited in a Medici Family possession in the heart of Tuscany. The setting will be the beautiful and historic Villa Medicea “La Ferdinanda” built in the 1500’s in Artimino, a few kilometres from Florence. This lovely villa is immersed in the green of the sweet Tuscan hills. "Horizons:" boundless emotions displayed in Renaissance enchantment.

"LANDSCAPES"
International Contemporary Art Exhibition
Estense Castle, Ferrara/Italy
29 October - 6 November, 2005

The power of colours, of shapes, of sensations, of the suggestions and of perfumes belongs to landscape, to Nature. Sometimes it is fascinating other times is restless, threatening other times, emerges and wraps us overwhelming, stimulating our senses. The Landscape, always changeable and rich of infinity shades. It reveals itself in its whole truth and power to those artists who daily paint it, showing unlimited faceting and interpretation.

“Landscapes” is an international Exhibition aiming to gather established and emerging, Italian and foreign, young and less younger, artists who have choosen the beauty and the charm of the landscape, and in general, of the Nature, as their inspiration fount. Participating artists will freely employ and deploy their pictorial gestures, their colours, their settings with the attempt to define experiences, memories, sensations, emotions, visions and they will confront each other with great harmony.

“Landscapes” won’t be a traditional Exhibition. The basic idea is not born to go toward the public tasting but to give the right and aesthetic value to a pictorial kind of painting that has always existed and given emotions; protagonist of the most important art museums. Yet, this painting will be a subject to the criticism whether of being too easy or elementary to paint. The Exhibition wants to go beyond the limit of a simple representation of the landscape. Rather, it will be proposed the idea of lively and secret Nature that, still able to stimulate a poetic sense of amazement amongst viewers. Thanks to the different artistic expressions of this theme that theme manages to provoke. We will face romantic visions, abstractions, Naif tales, airy, fresh, sunny landscapes – painted en plain air as requires the impressionistic tradition – and Mediterranean horizons. We will also admire intimate natures that merge realist and dreamy visions together.

Inside the exhibitive path, a large universe versatility, made by exterior and interior world, will be revealed. While the artists will be painting the selected landscape, pour a series of emotions whether consciously or unconsciously, only belongs to their universe. Life drawing solicitations, reminiscences, and visual traces of memories guide us in a sweet abandon between reality and fiction which would make us forgetting the vision for emotion.

Only artists’ glances and their souls can reveal what Nature has stored for us with its secrets, its charms and its wonderful fruitages.

The organizers, during the Exhibitions at the Estenese Castle, will select and bring artists together as representatives of this kind of spiritual and artistic research. Artists’ works have to preserve the “landscape” theme and believe in the emotional possibilities that this artwork offers. The range of expressive forms can be extremely wide and varied: painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and graphic.

On this artistic and cultural occasion, the Jury will award the "Filippo De Pisis" Prize to the artist who displays the most significant artworks during the Exhibition. The “Emerging Artist” Prize will tend to give prominence to emerging artists and to more protagonists of the artistic and contemporary scenery.

The curators will also make sure to involve Institutions, critics, operators, collectors, press and specialized media. As well, they will underline the approach of the cultural and of the marketing aspect of this event, which is an inseparable feature of contemporary art.

"EMOTIONS IN MOTION"
International Contemporary Art Exhibition
Estense Castle, Ferrara/Italy
12 - 22 March, 2005

Perhaps there still is a respect in which "Emotions in motion" would not completely obsolete as a title for an art Exhibition. Today art is very much conceptual and too often seems to be absorbed in a constant search for empty and vacuous provocations. Yet it is still capable of exploring the purely pictorial, emotional, and introspective dimensions of aesthetic experience.

Luckily we have not yet reached the 'ground zero' of art, as Jean Baudrillard predicted, even though, sadly, very much of his pessimistic prediction has already turned into reality. Yet there are many artists today who still feel the need to dirty the canvas and to pour the burden of their emotions upon it, to express those feelings and moods they experience during the act of painting and as well as those which constantly flow though them.

"Emotions in motion" is an International Exhibition aiming to gather established and emergent, Italian and foreign, artists who still concern themselves with the attempt to define experiences, memories, sensations, visions and, also -- why not? -- premonitions.
Participating artists will freely employ and deploy their pictorial gestures, their colours and signs in order to get as close as possible to the psychological sphere: those feelings, emotions, and moods that make up our spiritual dimension.

"Emotions in motion" intends to give space to this kind of artistic research, to an art that finds its strength in the expressive power of sign, colour, subject, and visual impression, since our sight is ineluctably attracted to the canvas that is bathed in evocation.

Artists representative of this kind of spiritual and artistic research will be brought together with those artists who still believe in the emotional possibilities that art offers. The range of expressive forms can be extremely wide and varied: painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and installation.

On this artistic and cultural occasion, the Jury will award the "Ercole d'Este" prize to the artist who shows the most significant artworks during the Exhibition.

The choice of scenery for the "Emotions in motion" Exhibition was selected to complement this general frame of artistic and emotional research. The beautiful and evocative setting provided by the "Imbarcadero Rooms" of the historic Este Castle that dominates the city centre (which was turned into a Museum last July) shows how "Emotions in motion" aims to be an Exhibition that moves outside the conventional norms of profile exhibitions.

The curators will also make sure to involve critics and operators in the event, underlining how they approach the cultural and marketing side of the event, which is an inseparable aspect of contemporary art.
