I would like to give my contribution to the newsletter through a sort of written diary condensing what I’ve experienced in the few last months. Last year, in occasion of the exhibition “Spirit. The Spirit in Art” which took place in November 2007, I had the great pleasure to meet and to share ideas, opinions and projects, primarily with attending artists but also, during the preparation, with the ones who didn’t physically come. The meeting with these artists gave me the energy to work every day in this art world that as you know better than me, it’s not all roses… as we say in Italy. This Exhibition was the strong confirmation you all gave me of how intimately artists are related to the spiritual sphere, believing in the power of spirituality. I also witnessed and participated, like in past exhibitions, in rich and interesting intercultural exchanges. Also visiting the Biennale of Florence in December, gave me the chance to be introduced to some good artists I immediately felt very close to my way of thinking, and to consider the art world in its many facets. I still have such good memories of meeting and talks while eating some pasta and good red wine, both in Ferrara and Florence. We are soulmates. The idea of the Trevisan International Art Forum (TIA) came talking with some of you, considering the importance to promote and to represent those artists who believe in, and support me, providing them with an international channel and international connections, in order to promote their art, not only in my city and in Italy but also in other countries, and this will be possible thanks to the contribution of all of you. Lots of good inputs came from the “International San Valentine Art Prize” taken in February, in Vico del Gargano, in Puglia, an enchanting region; I was invited by the ‘New Vico in Arte’ association to curate an International Selection of artists made by their art director, Valerio Grimaldi. It was gratifying getting the enthusiastic and sincere compliments from organizers and municipal authorities for my job of curator but above all for the international exhibitors. Now my strengths are focused on preparing for the next exhibition I will organize and curate, “Little Treasures”, and it will take place in Bologna 10-24 May 2008. This exhibition aims to gather a group of artists I have the luck to work with, some are already established good friends and some others are new. I really wanted to assemble you another time and give you some ‘hard time’, commissioning such small pieces, thank you for your acceptance! I chose the city of Bologna because it’s a lively and dynamic large city where contemporary art and music are always welcomed. Bologna is one of the most beautiful cities in the north which invites visitors to stroll along its alleys, its arcades and its roads of the historical centre, feeling the traces of the past and of the present. It’s my idea to repeat this kind of exhibition every year, each time in different city, I’m aware it’s a big attempt but “Little Treasures” in Bologna will represent the first step towards the realization of this project. I would like to invite all of you to keep an eye on our Newsletter and to send your news, photos, projects in order to keep it lively; the updating from each of you will be the most precious contributuion to this website and please, take a few minutes to read and to contribute to the “Readers Views”, open to members and non-members. It’s always very good to exchange opinions about art. It’s important that we all view this website not only as a window in the international art scene, but also as a precious instrument to share our daily experiences and opinions, in a formal or informal way. Let me also thank Karl Maenz not only for his wonderful job in creating and maintaining this website but also for his continuos inputs and for his contagious enthusiasm. Grazie Karl! I would like to close this kind of ‘diary’ with my warmest wishes to Cariya Breemen and Sharon Goldberg for their opening of their art space “Access Art”, good luck!!!

Feedback: our new website www.trevisan-international-art.com |
| |
| The first month in operation showed a very good start for our new website: |
| |
| - 63 invited artists sent complete inputs for the Members page; |
| - the site was visited 2,363 times over one month, currently 50 per day; |
| - visits to the site came from 27 countries; |
| - every 3rd member sent inputs for the Newsletter and Views pages; |
| - we received 3 "Thoughts" (Keith Morant, Tony Buczko, Nancy Reyner). |
| |
Even if you deduct the initial crawler visits by Google and other search engines, the site has started to get lots of attention. I am optimistic – if TIA members and art enthusiasts in general continue to feed the site with high quality input – we could soon grow qualified visits by art enthusiasts into a respectable range. This will give our participating TIA members a precious exposure to art professionals globally. |
|
About every third TIA member has already participated in the Newsletter, Thoughts or Views pages. Many of these contributions have been of wonderful quality. We’ve also enjoyed a nascent, lively back and forth in the Views section. Stephen Gostt deserves first prize for his thoughtful and frequent contributions. Thanks Steve! Don’t worry about ultimate language quality - few of us could claim Shakespeare ancestry. After all, the purpose is to network, and I promise my modest assistance with grammar and sbellczeques, oops spell checks. If you prefer to submit your input in German, Italian or French, Paola or I can translate.
|
| |
I've recently emailed all TIA members a 10-point questionnaire to rate the site and suggest improvements. I'd like to thank all in advance for sending me their thoughts. Have a most successful art season. I look forward to hear from you, and hopefully to meet again at Bologna, Ferrara, or elsewhere, |

Nancy is celebrating one year since the release of her new book Acrylic Revolution. With over 100 painting techniques specifically focused on acrylic, this book is currently the #1 Best Seller for publisher North Light Books, and has sold over 20,000 copies to date. Nancy noticed that acrylic is often forced into a narrow playing field, mostly used to imitate oil or watercolor mediums and processes. And yet, this relatively new medium has so much more to offer. Nancy decided to write a book geared for the professional artist. Instead of the usual “how-to” book focusing on copying, this book is laid out recipe book style, with each page introducing a different technique. The basic idea then, is that an artist can create their own unique style by selecting and combining techniques to produce something new. Therefore, each technique ends with a technique NOT a painting. Nancy is sponsored by an American acrylic paint company, Golden Artist Colors, Inc. who has invited her to visit the paint lab, and gets up to date technical advice and news, along with the chance to try the latest acrylic products. |

Nadyia Jinnah had a recent show at Broadway Gallery in New York. Here are excerpts from a review by Simone Cappa of Nadyia's work at the show, published in the NYArts January/February 2008 issue:
"... More specifically however, in her recent show at Broadway Gallery in New York City, Jinnah has taken up as her subject matter the complex beauty of the Mediterranean coastline. In this show of new works by the artist, Jinnah again proves her Chagall-esque mastery of color and texture, but this time within the specific terms of the ever-shifting Mediterranean. Captured in the rise and fall of her unique technique of applying clay as a negative mold against the surfaces of her canvases, Jinnah’s work here incorporates an unfiltered rainbow of color that represents the hundreds upon hundreds of gradations inherent in this temperate sea.
In her work Sun Expressions, four panels of radiating light and color unite to form a powerful image of our earth’s ultimate energy source upon which all life, both on land and at sea, is entirely dependent. Here, Jinnah constructs fine bursts of bulging clay reminiscent of the blisters of intense heat and solar winds found upon the sun’s violent surface. Each panel here has a different color scheme than the last, and it is the fact that Jinnah has incorporated a slightly different texture and consistency into each that most fully points to the diversity of the vital environments that the sun supports. Here, the subtle alterations in color and texture upon each canvas represent the complex “lifescape” that is our natural world. The Mediterranean may be only a tiny facet of this vast universal scheme but, within this arresting series, the artist proves that this aspect of our global ecosystem provides extensive fodder for conceptual as well as visual exploration.
In a work like her triptych Ocean Glory, for instance, Jinnah establishes an off-kilter world just beneath the ocean’s surface within which vibrant life flourishes under the push and pull of the ocean current’s constant sway. Particularly dominant in this underwater scene is a substantial yellow and orange entity that appears to twist and turn its way across the length of all three canvases. Although Jinnah’s oeuvre is rarely figurative, this work suggests the likes of sea creatures like shrimp or brightly colored corals, thanks in large part to the complex patterns of texture that the artist works onto the canvases’ surfaces.
The textures Jinnah applies in this work, however, are most successful of all in terms of their play with light and shadow. When viewed under a light source of any kind, the tiny ripples that the artist so carefully crafts here glimmer like the inconstant surface of the sea. All in all, Ocean Glory could not be a more stunning example of this artist’s immense talent at refracting the world around her in an even more immaculate and brightly hued light than she originally found it.
In a time of increasing ecological anxiety, Jinnah joins a growing number of artists whose works, both implicitly and explicitly, confront the fragility of our unstable planet. Jinnah’s majestic canvases both survey and successfully evoke the beauty and the ferocity of the natural world, but they also force us to reconsider the present-day vulnerability of the landscapes that she so eloquently captures through light, color, and texture." |
